Thomas Hart Benton 91782-1858)
An American writer and a Democratic party leader, Benton championed agrarian interests and westward expansion. He served 5 terms as senator from Missouri. He was known to be feisty and hotheaded in pursuit of his goals. He challenged Andrew Jackson to a duel and lived the rest of his life with Jackson's bullet lodged in his body.
