John C. Fremont (1813-1890) was an American military officer, an explorer and a politician. He was well known for his accomplishments in all three areas. He was one of the first two US senators from California. He lead 4 expeditions into the western pat of the United States and served a military governor of California during the Mexican American War. He made a lot of money in the California gold rush but lost much of it in lawsuits.
