James 'Bird's-Eye' McPherson (1828-1864) sometimes referred to as "the forgotten hero of the Civil War." He commanded the Army of the Tennessee. He was mortally wounded at the Battle of Atlanta in July of 1864. McPherson was the highest ranking Union officer to die in battle.
