(Mid-Atlantic) London: Baldwin and Craddock for The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, (1833)
“North America. Sheet VII. Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Columbia and Part of Virginia. Sheet VII”
This is an attractive and very easily legible map of the mid-Atlantic states and parts of Virginia and West Virginia with great detail concerning topographical features of mountains, rivers and lakes as well as small towns and some institutions. It shows the District of Columbia before retrocession; the process of returning part of the land that had been ceded to the federal government to create a national capital. The District of Columbia was formed in 1790, with 100 square miles of land ceded by Maryland and Virginia. Thirty-one square miles ceded by Virginia was returned to that state in 1846. The District of Columbia now consists of the remaining 69 square miles originally ceded by Maryland.
This map has great detail of the coasts of New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay region.
