“Scenographia Systematis Mundani Ptolemaici . . .”

Fine old color example of Cellarius's chart illustrating Claudius Ptolemy's earth-centered model of the universe.

Andreas Cellarius’ best-known work is his Harmonia Macrocosmica, first issued in 1660 by Jan Jansson, as a supplement to Jansson's Atlas Novus. The work consists of a series of celestial charts begun by Cellarius in 1647 and intended as part of a two-volume treatise on cosmography, which was never issued.

The map details the Eastern Hemisphere showing Europe, Africa, Asia and with a great enormous southern hemisphere, and the signs of the zodiac ring the earth. The engraving is alive with flying putti holding scientific instruments. In the lower left corner, a well- built town represents modern astronomy and on the right scholars and astronomers are shown deep in discussion beneath ruins representing ancient and disproven astronomical theories.

Clean and sharp impression with full original hand color, prominent centerfold. Wonderful example of 17th century scientific theory.

Copperplate engraving on laid paper with full color.
17.5 x 20.5 sight, 23 ¾ x 27 inches outside framed size.
Very good condition.
