Jodocus Hondius(1513-1612) was one of the principal map engravers of this time; a period in which the Dutch were in the forefront of cartography. In 1604, Hondius bought the copperplates that had been created by Gerhard Mercator. He added another forty maps and published an atlas highly prized for the accuracy of its maps as well as for their remarkable beauty. Note the typical strapwork detailing of the cartouche, windroses, engraved sailing ships and sea monsters. This example possesses the beautifully preserved opaque original coloring that is another hallmark of these maps.
