A beautiful view of Philadelphia from Kensington, just north of the city along the Delaware River. John Rubens Smith, an English immigrant, was one of the more important American artists of the early nineteenth century, known for his drawings, engravings, and teaching. It is one of the prettiest and most widely copies of 19th century views of the city's waterfront. a showing the skyline, the buildings along the river and shipping activity. From its initial publication about 1834, through it various manifestations towards mid-century, this was one of the most popular views of Philadelphia. This is the second state, engraved by J. Archer.
