“The New Market Street Bridge, Philadelphia.”

F.E. Lummis drew the design which served as the basis of this engraving depicting the iron cantilevered bridge - the third true bridge to occupy the the important commercial site where Market Street crosses the Schuylkill River. Trolley cars and horses and carriages cross the span of the bridge, railroad tracks in the foreground and barges in the river indicate the other methods of transport used during this period. The Market Street Bridge was the final link in the Philadelphia and Lancaster Turnpike.
