"Center Harbour. (Lake Winnipisseoogee)"
Travel books which would describe sites with text and engraved illustrations were extremely popular during the 19th century. William Bartlett was one of the most talented and prolific of travel artists. This beautifully detailed engraving shows the small lakeside town as it existed in the first half of the 19th century. It is a wonderfully bucolic scene with far distant views across the lake and a farmer walking his cows down the sandy road to shelter for the evening.
