“A Blockade on Broadway”
This view from the December 29th, 1883 issue of Harper’s Weekly shows that traffic tie-ups in New York City are nothing new. In fact late 19th century periodicals are full of accounts of blockades on Broadway caused by steam pipe explosions, trolley car malfunctions, traffic accidents and all other manner of obstructions. In this incredibly detailed view we see throngs of pedestrians, horses, and carriages, wagons, police and trolley cars clogging the streets in all directions.
