“Staafsvnd”
Dahlberg (1625-1703) was an engineer, soldier and author. He collected and collated a great collection of landscape ad architectural engravings in the middle of the 17th century.
The work with its glorious engravings, was a sweeping tribute to the Swedish crown, which at the time was a world power. It is indeed a splendid work, full of romantic castles, gardens, Swedish buildings and landmarks with an almost fairytale quality.
Although the Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna, or Ancient and Modern Sweden, glorified the lands of Sweden, the engravings were created by French and Dutch artists, who could provide more detailed plates than Swedish artists at the time.
Immaculate and detailed, this fold-out view details formally planned gardens and the magnificent estate buildings book ending each side of the design.
Copperplate engraving on laid paper, hand colored.
